James Eling: Hey, it’s James from Marketing4Restaurants and welcome to episode 17 of Secret Sauce, the restaurant marketing podcast. How to increase walk in traffic for your restaurant.
James: Restaurant walk-in. People who are walking down the street looking for somewhere to eat and come into your restaurant. We all love those kind of customers, so tonight we’re going to talk about ways that you can increase the number of people who are coming into your restaurant. And it’s one of those things that I find really interesting, because there’s a lot of restaurants who are actually doing a really bad job of it. And the interesting thing is, I don’t even think they know some of the mistakes that they’re making. So, before we get into the meat and potatoes of today’s topic, I want to talk a little bit about a restaurant autopsy.
Now, it’s not quite a dead restaurant but it’s a dead concept. I was talking to a restaurant owner and he’s been talking to us on and off for probably the last 12 months, doesn’t use any of our products yet but he’s been thinking about it. And he rings us up for advice every now and then. And he’s thinking about getting a website but the thing that he’s going to do first, so he has no website for his restaurant at all. So, he misses out all of the search traffic, he’s not appearing in Google Maps, he’s not appearing on mobile phones. And here’s an interesting little statistic which we might delve into a little bit deeper in a future episode, but over half the traffic for a restaurant website comes from Google. So, they are people who are out there looking and we know from the search terms that are used that a lot of the time they’re looking for things like Indian restaurant/suburb, or gluten free restaurant.
So, they don’t actually know where they’re going, they’re looking for somewhere to go. This is a restaurant that misses out on all of that. He’s relying on trying to tell his message through a Facebook page, which is quite inactive. He doesn’t post very often there so it doesn’t look like there’s a lot going on there. There’s no real way to find out what the menu is, he’s not controlling any of the message that’s going out. And I said, “So, you know, what are you thinking about a website?” And he said, “Well, actually, what we’re going to do is we’re going to redo the concept for the whole restaurant. We’re going to come up with something completely new. I’ve gone to the bank and we’ve got a loan of credit for $200,000 and so we’re going to do that. And then we’re going to think about a website.” And I just thought that would have to be putting the cart before the horse. He hasn’t really even tried this concept because he hasn’t actually been marketing it properly. He’s been hoping that people are going to come along and I’ve spoken a few times about restaurant fit outs, I’m not a really big fan of spending a huge amount on fit out. Because it’s one of those things that you just don’t know whether you’re really going to get your return on investment.
So, $200,000, is it really going to change the number of people who come in? Possibly. But on the balance of probabilities, we’d probably have to say not. When he could have got a website for $1,000 and could have been getting, and the average restaurant website get north of 1,000 visits per month. And a large percentage of those convert. So, if he’s missing out on all of those people that are going looking for his cuisine, looking for a restaurant in his area, they’re going somewhere else. He’s been fighting with one hand behind his back and now he’s throwing in the towel. And he’s going to be spending all of this money, I mean, $200,000 is a lot to spend on a new concept and it’s partially the money. I think that that’s a huge amount of money, he’s going to be further in debt with the bank but the other component of that is that he’s going to be taking his eye off the ball. And I think restaurant owners sometimes do this because that’s the fun part, you know, “Let’s come up with a new concept. Let’s come up with a new menu.” That’s fun and exciting, but realistically do you want to be spending $200,000 to go through that process? I would have thought probably not.
Maybe get the restaurant going firing on all cylinders, and open a second restaurant with a different concept. You know, there’s an idea that might work out quite well. But, yeah, so, very sad. Surveysaot tribute game wiki. Not a dead restaurant at the moment, but a dead concept and it’s going to cost the restaurant owner $200,000. One of those things to really have a think about are you giving your marketing plan every chance of success? Now, restaurant walk ins. Okay, so, for that what we’re thinking about is the restaurant that is typically within a group of restaurants and people, that group of restaurants can be so popular that it becomes a destination. And so, in Melbourne I’m thinking somewhere like Lygon street. Whenever we go to Lygon street I will say, “Let’s go to Lygon street,” we don’t actually have a restaurant in mind. We decide to go to Lygon street, park the car, you get out, and you wander up and down and you’re going to look for somewhere to eat. This is when it’s a really fierce battle to get people into your restaurant to be able to sell them some food. So, you really want to be thinking about a lot of the things.
Now, obviously, you need to have traffic going by. So, if you don’t have a lot of traffic going by, you’re really going to struggle with walk ins. And I know restaurant owners who say, you know, “We really struggle with walk ins,” and that’s because you’re down a dark alley, that’s connected to another dark alley, that’s connected to a place that no one goes to. You’re never going to get walk in traffic there. You need to have a significant amount of traffic in the first place. You also need to acknowledge that walk in traffic is a part of your market plan. I see a lot of restaurants now trying to do this hidden thing, you know, the hidden door thing where there’s no sign. It’s just a door, you know, it might be almost a secret door which, you know, you kind of have to know. There might be a secret knock or something like that. You’re never going to attract passing traffic there, and I always find that this is one of those holy grails where you can be that secret restaurant that no one knows about, apart from the people who go there.
There’s one really fundamental part of that marketing plan – people need to know about it. You’re not going to attract walk in traffic. People aren’t going to go searching for a restaurant that they’ve never heard of. So, you really need to be working doubly hard with the marketing to create that chic kind of idea that, you know, people want to go to this place because it’s hidden and secret. It’s a tough marketing gig to get. And I always find it a little bit interesting when, you know, you go to one of these places and there’s only, you know, 6 or 10 people in there in a restaurant that’s going to seat, you know, 50 or 60 people. It’s like, yes, this is a really, really well-kept secret. No one knows about it. So, you’re on a strip of restaurants and what are the kind of things that you can do to increase your customer numbers.
The first and foremost thing that I think is that you need to understand that, in an environment like that, the first customer is always the hardest to get. You want to get that first customer in because they’re the ones who provide that social validation. I was with a friend once and we went out for brekky and she said, “You know, I’ve heard some things about this place. It’s meant to be pretty good.” We walked in and we almost walked all the way to the back of the restaurant and she said, “No, there’s no enough people here. We’re going to go next door.” And it was like wow, you know, I would never be that bold. But she was really looking for that, I think that once you’ve walked into a place, you know, you’re pretty much committed and they have to do something fairly terrible for you to say, “No, I’m not actually going to eat here.” But yeah, she wanted to see more people there to get that social validation that, it makes it feel that the locals know what’s going on here.
So, one of the most important things, and I think this is something that’s done really quite well in the United States and not very well in Australia is happy hour. In Australia, happy hour tends to be associated with alcohol, funny about that, but I think that there’s a lot to be said for non-alcohol related happy hours. So, some food that, you know, and it might be a special happy hour menu, might be a tasting menu. Something that is light and easy for the kitchen to cook, you know, as they’re, because they’re probably still doing prep for the main dinner sitting. But some things that they can get out pretty easily to get people in. And I always think that one of the important things is to start looking at the demographics that you have of people that are walking by. And I was talking to one restaurant owner and he started opening up early because he had people who were going home, people would start to leave, you know, sort of 4:30, 5:00. He was targeting those people to come in for a quick meal, something that was quick, cheap, very happy hour kind of meal. Easy for the kitchen to prepare.
And the important thing was that those people would be in and they’d be in for half an hour and then he had some people in the restaurant. And those people would get more people and by the time the full dinner city had started, he’s restaurant was half of three quarters full. And on some nights, he even had a bit of a queue forming up. That’s the perfect scenario that you really want to be in. And so, of course, you’re going to advertise that. And there’s two ways, I think, well, three. You’re A frame, I think A frames are really good because what they do is they stop people in their tracks. It gives them the opportunity too, as they’ve got their head down, as they’re walking along, “Wow, you know, 50 percent off a main meal,” or, you know, some sort of, you know, maybe a pie and pea and ham soup. You know, something, if it’s winter, something that’s obviously seasonal, something that’s going to appeal to people who are heading home.
Because they’re the people, you just want to interrupt them for half an hour rather than go home, particularly if they live alone. Rather than go home, here’s something quick and cost effective for you to come in and have a bit of a warm meal. That’s sort of makes sense. Of course, if you’ve got a great email database that’s another thing that you can do, you know. “Don’t forget to stop by for our happy hour meals, you know. Choose from one of these four meals between 4:30 and 6:00.” That’s the kind of thing that will drag people in. Obviously, bring them towards your quitter days. These offers, they’ve got to be the times when you’re not going to be busy. Because if you’re going to be busy you don’t want to be giving away any discounts. So, you’ve got you’re A frame there. Now, one of the first things that I think is really important when you’re trying to analyse how you appear with walk in traffic is go across the street and have a look at people walking by. What do they do? Look at everyone who walks by. How many people stop and notice your restaurant in any way, shape, or form?
And this is the importance of A frames or, you know, greeters. We’ll talk about greeters, you know, a sign flipper, whatever it is that you want to do to actually stop people. Because this is where you’re trying to sell and if people have just got their head down and they’re heading to the train station, that’s a very, very tough sell. They’re not even going to notice your restaurant. So, you really need to be doing something to break their pattern, to get them to think, “You know what, I am hungry. Yeah, this would be good.” So, how many people are stopping to notice it? How many people are looking in and what is it that they see? And this leads to one of my, one of the biggest mistakes that I see restaurant owners committing when they’re trying to get walk in traffic to come in, and that is not have the menu there.
So, the menu, it’s one of your main selling tools. And that’s you negotiating with your potential customer, you know, “This is what we have on offer, this is how much it’s going to cost. You should really come in because, you know, the description sounds pretty exciting. Too many people don’t have that there and they’re expecting people to come in without knowing what is on the menu. Now, we’ve got a couple of significant problems there. One, what is on the menu? Because unsure about the kind of food, you know, if it’s a pizza restaurant, even if it’s fairly obvious, “We’re a pizza restaurant.” What kind of pizzas? You know, do you offer gluten free? And, of course, we’re not answering the fundamental question, how much is it going to cost? You know, is it too much? Is it too little? How much are you going to charge me for this food? And I think it’s important to realize that most people try to avoid an argument, they try to avoid a socially awkward scene. And it is socially awkward to sit at a table, you know, your server comes out, they poor some water for you, they bring out the menu and you’re having a look at it. And then you’re thinking, “No, this is too expensive,” or, “This food sounds awful,” or, “They don’t have gluten free,” or there’s some other thing, there’s some other show stopper here that means that I know have to leave.
And a lot of people are embarrassed or want to avoid the situation where they’re going to get up and leave and say, “No, I’m not going to eat here.” And we do it very rarely and usually it’s something hugely glaring that will cause us to do that. So, the point of putting the menu there is A, to sell the concept of coming into the restaurant, but two, to provide some sort of assurity, to provide some certainty. “Yes, this is the right amount of money that I want to spend tonight. Yes, there is something on the menu that I want to eat.” Or, “Yes, these guys cater for kids.” Or, “Yes, there’s a gluten free option here that sound really good.” So, make sure that you’ve got your menu there.
Now, the next thing is what does the menu look like? I see some places where the menu was placed there, you know, around 1956 and, of course, it’s been raining ever since then and so, it’s bedraggled and looks awful and tatty. And that’s your menu, that’s your main selling point. And if that’s what it looks like then, you know, what does it look like in the kitchen? Probably pretty ordinary, as well. So, you want to make sure that, you know, your menu is well presented, all of your general, you know, menu engineering type things, you know. You’re going to be highlighting the items that are your signature items that you want people to order, that are ideally high profit margin. Because this is, you know, people will have a look there, “I know exactly what I’m going to have. I’m going to have this and I’m going to have this. And then, for dessert, I’m going to have that.” So, this is when they’re making their decisions. You want to start already shaping them towards the kind of decisions that you want to make now. That’s really important. So, can you go that one step further? And I know some people do an amazing job of creating a picture in the mind of their customers through the descriptions that they have.
For people who aren’t able to create that picture in their own head. You know, are the photos? Do you have, you know, a couple of items there that you can put a photo in the window? I think that that’s a really important component that you can have in there, as well. You know, some photos, if you’ve got signature items that are really exciting, you know, put them in the window. Tell people about it so that they can start getting a little bit excited about, “Yes, this is where I want to eat.” Now, as you’re watching people as they go by one of the things that I always think is really interesting, and this is a little bit confrontational. So, you need to be pretty confident about what you’re doing. One of the things that I like to do though, is to recommend that, you’re going to see people who look and you can see they’re thinking. They’re having a look at the menu, if they’re with someone they might be a little bit of a discussion. Then they keep on walking. And I think that there’s a really good opportunity to

The general procedure for curve sketching is based on the material learned in the last few sections. Essentially, the first and second derivatives are used to determine which of the following pieces will be used where to form the graph:
Then, intercepts and asymptotes are found to refine the graph and make it more accurate.
Example: Sketch a graph of f (x) = .
Step 1: Determine the domain of f. Mechanical keyboard for macheavenlyboard.
In this case, f is undefined only at x = 3 and x = - 3, so the domain includes all x except those two points. These two points will turn out to be important, because places where the graph is undefined could potentially be vertical asymptotes or places where the function changes concavity or direction.
A rocket launch involves two related quantities that change over time. Being able to solve this type of problem is just one application of derivatives introduced in this chapter. We also look at how derivatives are used to find maximum and minimum values of functions.

Applications of the Derivative. A very typical calculus problem is given the equation of a function, to find information about it (extreme values, concavity, increasing, decreasing, etc., etc.). This is usually done by computing and analyzing the first derivative and the second derivative. All the textbooks show how to do this with copious examples and exercises.
Step 2 Use the first derivative to find the critical points and determine the direction of the graph.
A) Find the critical points
f’(x) is undefined at x = - 3 and x = + 3, but these points are not part of the domain of f, so these are not considered critical points.
B) To determine the direction of f, find the sign of f’. Mark off on a number line the points at which f’ can change sign. These include critical points and the points where f is undefined.
By inspection, (x2 -9)2 is always positive, so the sign of the derivative depends only on the sign of the numerator -2x. The sign of the derivative on the various intervals is filled in on the chart below with arrows to indicate the behavior of f (x).
Step Three: Use the second derivative to find the concavity and the points of inflection.
A) First find where the second derivative equals zero
f’(x) = f’(x) =
This is never equal to zero, but is undefined at x = - 3 and x = + 3.
B) Mark off the points where the concavity could change, which are the places where the second derivative is zero or undefined, or places where the function itself is undefined. Then determine the sign of the second derivative on those intervals.
Since (6x2 + 18) is always positive, the sign of the second derivative will match the sign of the term (x2 - 9):
Note that even though the concavity changes at x = - 3 and at x = + 3, these are not inflection points, since f is undefined there.
Step 4: Find the horizontal and vertical asymptotes
A) To find horizontal asymptotes, take limits of the function at infinity:
Thus, y = 0 is the horizontal asymptote of f as it approaches both negative and positive infinity.
B) Candidates for vertical asymptotes are places where f is undefined. Generate traffic and interest with an online poll.
= + ∞ and = - ∞,
so x = - 3 is a vertical asymptote. Also,
so x = 3 is a vertical asymptote of f.
Step 5: Find the exact coordinates of the x - and y - intercepts, the critical points, and the points of inflection.
x-intercept: None, since could never equal zero
y-intercept: (0,)
Critical Points: (0,)
Points of inflections: None
Step 6: Combine all of the evidence collected to graph the function4 Applications Of The Derivative Part 1ap Calculus Solver

Want to know how to be happy at work? You’re definitely not alone. For many people, attaining happiness at work is among their top goals in life. Yet, the more they chase it, the more elusive it becomes—despite the fact that finding or creating happy jobs really is achievable. So you need to approach this challenge the right way.
Jobs that make you happy won’t necessarily announce themselves in bright, neon colors. Rather, they are often only found by paying closer attention to the more subtle and indirect factors that contribute to a sense of joy or contentment. They are the result of matching your core strengths with vocational options that, by their very nature, provide the conditions known to play major roles in creating happiness.
Plus, what you think will make you feel joyful and fulfilled might be very different than what will actually make you feel that way. In fact, that’s true for most people. Thankfully, however, plenty of research shines a light on some of the most common factors responsible for making people feel happy in their jobs.Careers That Make People Happy
As you explore your career possibilities, it can help to know exactly which kinds of jobs tend to have a lot of happy workers. The following occupations are known for often providing multiple ’happiness-generating’ factors like those listed below. And most of them also pay well and don’t necessarily require years of training at a trade school, college, or university.
Obviously, though, not every job is suitable for every person. The key is to think about your core personal traits and match those to the career options in which you’ll be able to use them.
For example, if one of your strengths is kindness, then certain jobs in healthcare might be worth considering. Or if you’re naturally creative, then give some consideration to design jobs. And if you’re not sure what your strengths are, try asking a few of the people who know you best. That way, you might get the advantage of learning what they think could be happy jobs for you.

Time and time again, researchers have discovered that money and prestige play only small roles in generating sustained happiness. Many of the most fulfilled workers simply do not have what would be considered high-paying or highly distinguished jobs. Instead, they tend to enjoy positive and rewarding careers full of multiple other built-in benefits.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t be happy in your work while still enjoying a high salary or a fancy job title. You absolutely can. But it does mean that, in your search for a fulfilling occupation, you may want to seriously focus on a number of other factors first.
For example, the following factors have all been cited in different surveys and psychological research studies as being significant contributors to job happiness:Busy Day Teach To Be Happy Birthday
*Autonomy/freedom/independence, or a sense of control
*Work that is immersive, consistently interesting, or results in being ’in the zone’
*Work that has a clear purpose and easily recognized results
*A focus on making other people happy, caring for them, or fixing their problems
*Creative expression or a sense of personal connection to others or something larger
*Work that’s outdoors or away from a conventional office desk
*Variety—in terms of projects or people
*Work that’s challenging without being disheartening
* Opportunities to utilize your core individual strengths, which, among several others, might include a few traits such as:
*Kindness
*Creativity
*Leadership
*A love of learning
*Courage
*Empathy
*Good judgment
*Perseverance
*Teamwork
This list is by no means complete. For instance, a happy work environment is often made that way by a good boss who focuses on the growth and development of his or her team members while paying special attention to factors like the above. And the world’s extensive diversity of people means that each of us has a unique combination of traits, and we all respond a little differently to various work factors.
Nevertheless, learning how to find a job that makes you happy starts with understanding this: Where you place your focus can make all the difference between experiencing joy or disappointment.
Instead of trying to directly pursue happiness itself, try to go after the factors that make up its foundation. This indirect approach can help you find a greater sense of fulfillment than you ever expected.

No matter the condition of a statue, all are cut from the same stone---similar to humans from genetics. Statues are captivating, even the broken and unfinished ones.
Like a marble statue, you are a work of art, but it is crucial to remember that you are also a work in progress. And you, too, can chisel yourself into a better person by being productive.

Find a training program that can help you prepare for the types of happy jobs you’re looking for! Start your fun journey right now by searching for schools near you using your zip code.

Assessment is the process of collecting data to measure the knowledge or performance of a student or group. Written tests of students’ knowledge are a common form of assessment, but data from homework assignments, informal observations of student proficiency, evaluations of projects, oral presentations, or other samples of student work may also be used in assessment. The word assessment carries with it the idea of a broader and more comprehensive evaluation of student performance than a single test.
INC Tutoring, was extremely helpful to my children, ages 15 and 12. The tutor was instrumental in both of them testing well on their standardized tests and entrance exams to get into Bishop Dunne and Booker T Washington. We started using INC Tutoring about a year ago. IELTS is the high stakes English test for international study, migration and work. Open a world of opportunity with IELTS.
In an age when testing is controversial, assessment has become the preferred term because of its connotation of breadth and thoroughness. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is an example of a comprehensive assessment worthy of the name. Also known as the ’Nation’s Report Card,’ NAEP administers achievement tests to a representative sample of U.S. students in reading, mathematics, science, writing, U.S. history, civics, geography, and the arts. The achievement measures used by NAEP in each subject area are so broad that each participating student takes only a small portion of the total assessment. Not all assessment programs, however, are of such high quality. Some administer much more narrow and limited tests, but still use the word assessment because of its popular appeal.
Standardized tests are tests administered and scored under a consistent set of procedures. Uniform conditions of administration are necessary to make it possible to compare results across individuals or schools. For example, it would be unfair if the performance of students taking a test in February were to be compared to the performance of students tested in May or if one group of students had help from their teacher while another group did not. The most familiar standardized tests of achievement are traditional machine-scorable, multiple-choice tests such as the California Achievement Test (CAT), the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS), the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), the Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT), and the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT). Many other assessments, such as open-ended performance assessments, personality and attitude measures, English-language proficiency tests, or Advanced Placement essay tests, may also be standardized so that results can be interpreted on a common scale.
*Using our timed practice tests, you can simulate actual test-taking conditions and answer a series of questions before checking your answers and reading explanations on every question, enriching you with new ways of thinking, various strategies, and solving tips that could help you solve similar questions in the near future.
*A standardized achievement test approved by the State Board of Education is administered according to protocol annually to the child by a qualified individual; or An annual assessment of the student’s academic progress is written by a certificated certified person who is currently working in the field of education.
High-stakes testing is a term that was first used in the 1980s to describe testing programs that have serious consequences for students or educators. Tests are high-stakes if their outcomes determine such important things as promotion to the next grade, graduation, merit pay for teachers, or school rankings reported in a newspaper. When test results have serious consequences, the requirements for evidence of test validity are correspondingly higher.Purposes of Assessment
The intended use of an assessment–its purpose–determines every other aspect of how the assessment is conducted. Purpose determines the content of the assessment (What should be measured?); methods of data collection (Should the procedures be standardized? Should data come from all students or from a sample of students?); technical requirements of the assessment (What level of reliability and validity must be established?); and finally, the stakes or consequences of the assessment, which in turn determine the kinds of safeguards necessary to protect against potential harm from fallible assessment-based decisions.
In educational testing today, it is possible to distinguish at least four different purposes for assessment: (1) classroom assessment used to guide and evaluate learning; (2) selection testing used to identify students for special programs or for college admissions; (3) large-scale assessment used to evaluate programs and monitor trends; and (4) high-stakes assessment of achievement used to hold individual students, teachers, and schools accountable. Assessments designed for one of these purposes may not be appropriate or valid if used for another purpose.
In classrooms, assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Teachers use both formal and informal assessments to plan and guide instruction. For individual students, assessments help to gauge what things students already know and understand, where misconceptions exist, what skills need more practice in context, and what supports are needed to take the next steps in learning. Teachers also use assessment to evaluate their own teaching practices so as to adjust and modify curricula, instructional activities, or assignments that did not help students grasp key ideas. To serve classroom purposes, assessments must be closely aligned with what children are learning, and the timing of assessments must correspond to the specific days and weeks when children are learning specific concepts. While external accountability tests can help teachers examine their instructional program overall, external, once-per-year tests are ill-suited for diagnosis and targeting of individual student learning needs. The technical requirements for the reliability of classroom assessments are less stringent than for other testing purposes because assessment errors on any given day are readily corrected by additional information gathered on subsequent days.
Selection and placement tests may be used to identify students for gifted and talented programs, to provide services for students with disabilities, or for college admissions. Because selection tests are used to evaluate students with a wide variety of prior experiences, they tend to be more generic than standardized achievement tests so as not to presume exposure to a specific curriculum. Nonetheless, performance on selection measures is strongly influenced by past learning opportunities. Unlike IQ tests of the past, it is no longer assumed that any test can measure innate learning ability. Instead, measures of current learning and reasoning abilities are used as practical predictors of future learning; because all tests have some degree of error associated with them, professional standards require that test scores not be the sole determiner of important decisions. For example, college admissions tests are used in conjunction with high school grades and recommendations. School readiness tests are sometimes used as selection tests to decide whether children five years old should start school, but this is an improper use of the tests. None of the existing school readiness measures has sufficient reliability and validity to support such decisions.
Large-scale assessments, such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) or the Third International Mathematics and Science Survey (TIMSS), serve a monitoring and comparative function. Assessment data are gathered about groups of students in the aggregate and can be used by policymakers to make decisions about educational programs. Because there is not a single national or international curriculum, assessment content must be comprehensive and inclusive of all of the curricular goals of the many participating states or nations. Obviously, no one student could be expected to master all of the content in a test spanning many curricula, but, by design, individual student scores are not reported in this type of assessment. As a result, the total assessment can include a much broader array of tasks and problem types to better represent the content domain, with each student being asked to complete only a small sample of tasks from the total set. Given that important policy decisions may follow from shifts in achievement levels or international comparisons of achievement, large-scale assessments must meet high standards of technical accuracy.
High-stakes assessments of achievement that are used to hold individual students, teachers, and schools accountable are similar to large-scale monitoring assessments, but clearly have very different consequences. In addition, these tests, typically administered by states or school districts, must be much more closely aligned with the content standards and curriculum for which participants are being held accountable. As a practical matter, accountability assessments are often more limited in the variety of formats and tasks included, both because each student must take the same test and because states and districts may lack the resources to develop and score more open-ended performance measures. Regardless of practical constraints, high-stakes tests must meet the most stringent technical standards because of the harm to individuals that would be caused by test inaccuracies.A Short History of High-Stakes Testing
Accountability testing in the United States started in 1965 as part of the same legislation (Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act [ESEA]) that first allocated federal funds to improve the academic achievement of children from low-income families. Federal dollars came with a mandate that programs be evaluated to show their effectiveness. The early accountability movement did not assume, however, that public schools were bad. In fact, the idea behind ESEA was to extend the benefits of an excellent education to poor and minority children.
The public’s generally positive view of America’s schools changed with the famous SAT test score decline of the early 1970s. Despite the fact that a blueribbon panel commissioned by the College Board in 1977 later found that two-thirds to three-fourths of the score decline was attributable to an increase in the number of poor and minority students gaining access to college and not to a decline in the quality of education, all subsequent accountability efforts were driven by the belief that America’s public schools were failing.
The minimum competency testing movement of the 1970s was the first in a series of educational reforms where tests were used not just as measures of the effectiveness of reforms, but also as the primary drivers of reform. Legislators mandated tests of minimum academic skills or survival skills (e.g., balancing a checkbook), intending to ’put meaning back into the high school diploma.’ By 1980, thirty-seven states had taken action to mandate minimum competency standards for grade-to-grade promotion or high school graduation. It was not long, however, before the authors of A Nation at Risk (1983) concluded that minimum competency examinations were part of the problem, not part of the solution, because the ’minimum’ [required of students] tends to become the ’maximum,’ thus lowering educational standards for all’ (p. 20).
Following the publication of A Nation at Risk, the excellence movement sought to ratchet up expectations by reinstating course-based graduation requirements, extending time in the school day and school year, requiring more homework, and, most importantly, requiring more testing. Despite the rhetoric of rigorous academic curricula, the new tests adopted in the mid-1980s were predominantly multiple-choice, basic-skills tests–a step up from minimum competency tests, but not much of one. By the end of the 1980s, evidence began to accrue showing that impressive score gains on these tests might not be a sign of real learning gains. For example, John Cannell’s 1987 study, dubbed the ’Lake Wobegon Report,’ showed that all fifty states claimed their test scores were above the national average.
Standards-based reforms, which began in the 1990s and continued at the start of the twenty-first century, were both a rejection and extension of previous reforms. Rejecting traditional curricula and especially rote activities, the standards movement called for the development of much more challenging curricula, focused on reasoning, conceptual understanding, and the ability to apply one’s knowledge. At the same time, the standards movement continued to rely heavily on large-scale accountability assessments to leverage changes in instruction. However, standards-based reformers explicitly called for a radical change in the content and format of assessments to forestall the negative effects of ’teaching the test.’ Various terms, such as authentic, direct, and performance-based, were used in standards parlance to convey the idea that assessments themselves had to be reformed to more faithfully reflect important learning goals. The idea was that if tests included extended problems and writing tasks, then it would be impossible for scores to go up on such assessments without there being a genuine improvement in learning.Effects of High-Stakes Testing
By the end of the 1980s, concerns about dramatic increases in the amount of testing and potential negative effects prompted Congress to commission a comprehensive report on educational testing. This report summarized research documenting the ill effects of high-pressure accountability testing, including that high-stakes testing led to test score inflation, meaning that test scores went up without a corresponding gain in student learning. Controlled studies showed that test score gains on familiar and taught-to tests could not be verified by independent tests covering the same content. High-stakes testing also led to curriculum distortion, which helped to explain how spurious score gains may occur. Interview and survey data showed that many teachers eliminated science and social studies, especially in high-poverty schools, because more time was needed for math and reading. Teaching to the test also involved rote drill in tested subjects, so that students were unable to use their knowledge in any other format.Standardized Test Preparationmr. It should also be noted that established findings from the motivational literature have raised serious questions about test-based incentive systems. Students who are motivated by trying to do well on tests, instead of working to understand and master the material, are consistently disadvantaged in subsequent endeavors. They become less intrinsically motivated, they learn less, and they are less willing to persist with difficult problems.
To what extent do these results, documented in the late 1980s, still hold true for standards-based assessments begun in the 1990s? Recent studies still show the strong influence that high-stakes tests have on what gets taught. To the extent that the content of assessments has improved, there have been corresponding improvements in instruction and curriculum. The most compelling evidence of positive effects is in the area of writing instruction. In extreme cases, writing has been added to the curriculum in classrooms, most often in urban settings, where previously it was entirely absent.
Unfortunately, recent studies on the effects of standards-based reforms also confirm many of the earlier negative effects of high-stakes testing. The trend to eliminate or reduce social studies and science, because state tests focused only on reading, writing, and mathematics, has been so pervasive nationwide that experts speculate it may explain the recent downturn in performance in science on NAEP. In Texas, Linda McNeil and Angela Valenzuela found that a focus on tested content and test-taking skills was especially pronounced in urban districts.
In contrast with previous analysts who used test-score gains themselves as evidence of effectiveness, it is now widely understood by researchers and policymakers that some independent confirmation is needed to establish the validity of achievement gains. For example, two different studies by researchers at the RAND Corporation used NAEP as an independent measure of achievement gains and documented both real and spurious aspects of test-score gains in Texas. A 2000 study by David Grissmer, Ann Flanagan, Jennifer Kawata, and Stephanie Williamson found that Texas students performed better than expected based on family characteristics and socioeconomic factors. However, a study by Stephen Klein and colleagues found that gains on NAEP were nothing like the dramatic gains reported on Texas’s own test, the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS). Klein et al. also found that the gap in achievement between majority and minority groups had widened for Texas students on NAEP whereas the gap had appeared to be closing on the TAAS. Both of these studies could be accurate, of course. Texas students could be learning more in recent years, but not as much as claimed by the TAAS. Studies such as these illustrate the importance of conducting research to evaluate the validity and credibility of results from high-stakes testing programs.Professional Standards for High-Stakes Testing
The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (1999) is published jointly by the American Educational Research Association, the American Psychological Association, and the National Council on Measurement in Education. The Standards establish appropriate procedures for test development, scaling, and scoring, as well as the evidence needed to ensure validity, reliability, and fairness in testing. Drawing from the Standards, the American Educational Research Association issued a position statement in 2000 identifying the twelve conditions that must be met to ensure sound implementation of high-stakes educational testing programs.
First, individual students should be protected from tests being used as the sole criterion for critically important decisions. Second, students and teachers should not be sanctioned for failing to meet new standards if sufficient resources and opportunities to learn have not been provided. Third, test validity must be established for each separate intended use, such as student certification or school evaluation. Fourth, the testing program must fully disclose any likely negative side effects of testing. Fifth, the test should be ali

In the past decade, food at sporting events has transformed from hot dogs and French fries to gourmet fare. We’ve led this transformation—bringing innovative, chef-inspired dishes to big events all around the world. This February, we will bring our innovative spin on gourmet food to U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
But feeding tens of thousands of people is no small feat. Providing an exceptional culinary experience on game day—and doing it at scale—requires precise planning, experience and number crunching. It means understanding what customers want and expertly crafting menus that can be scaled to meet the needs of tens of thousands of fans and 2,500 staff.Feeding Fans Doesn’t Start on Game Day
In reality, we start feeding fans, volunteers and staff weeks before the game. In fact, it’s up to us to plan to feed staff and guests at events we’re hosting from the beginning of January through the big game and beyond. That means thousands of boxed lunches and hot meals, and a lot of planning and logistics to ensure everyone is energized in the weeks leading up to the big game.
On game day, events begin early—long before the players hit the field there are tailgate parties catered by us. Inside U.S. Bank Stadium, chefs and staff will begin prepping well before the sun comes up. And when the game begins, fans get ready to eat and drink as food encompasses the entire game day experience.
We’ve partnered with local chefs to infuse the flavor of the Twin Cities into food at this year’s game. Together, we are developing dishes based on some Minneapolis favorites that will please hometown fans and give out-of-towners a taste of what the Bold North is all about, including state fair favorites like turkey legs, porkchops-on-a-stick and cookie dough cones and barbecue, burgers and brats to give fans a taste of the Twin Cities.
In addition to foods that are familiar to Minnesotans, we’re bringing some flair and flavor from the two teams playing in the big game, including two sandwich options that pay tribute to each team. This creates another challenge—how do you feed nearly 70,000 hungry fans when you find out which team-inspired dishes you can feature just two weeks in advance? Our chefs create mock menus and food orders, and keep a close eye on the playoffs.
During the game, fans watching from club boxes and suites will experience some of the best U.S. Bank Stadium has to offer. Fans are fed in courses to provide the freshest food possible through every sack, fumble, miraculous catch and even the entertaining half-time show. This allows chefs to expand their menu offering and offer fresh, hot food throughout the night, rather than just the beginning of the game. Giving the Fans What They Want
Fans drive the food experience during any event we create. By gathering feedback through surveys at the stadium and beyond, and analyzing sales, we’re shaping menus from local bakeries and restaurants and serving up exciting dishes like walleye chowder, smoked brisket mac n cheese and Minnesota maple nut goodie bread pudding. These dishes don’t just show the unique flair of the Twin Cities, they provide fans with an unexpected gourmet experience during the game.
To scale for the big game, we look at data from our biggest games here at U.S. Bank Stadium, as well as past data, to determine just how many pounds of bratwurst, fried chicken, short ribs and nachos we’ll need. We also combine that with data about where our fans spend their time before the game—whether it’s at a fan festival or a sponsored tailgate. By tracking this data, we can determine just how hungry fans will be before they arrive at the stadium. Surveysaot Tribute GamesEnvironmental ImpactSurveysaot Tribute Game Play
Of course, feeding tens of thousands of fans and doing it in a responsible way is a challenge. That’s why our team at U.S. Bank Stadium will work to divert more than 90% of stadium waste during the game and beyond through the Rush2Recycle program. Fans and staff will recycle bottles and cans, compost organic materials like food waste and service ware, and repurpose signage and construction materials. Surveysaot Tribute Game Wiki
All of this to ensure that fans leave the game feeling as energized as they did when they arrived.

Arcade video games and lights and spinning wheels. Tibetan prayer wheels. Buddhist spinning drums. Multi-colored drums under the roof. Happy creative mind. The first thing that strikes a viewer, about Vibha Galhotra’s large tapestries of a city’s landscape, is the material. Hundreds of different shades of ghungroos or anklet bells are stitched on to canvases: graded from light to dark, silver to gold, the clusters of ghungroos create tonalities, depth, perspective and demarcation, in what is otherwise a flat tapestry. Now that the Games have begun, the press has revisited the issue. But India also had some exciting news on Monday. Coming into the Beijing Olympics, India has earned only seventeen medals, ever. To make matters worse, most of those were in Men’s Hockey (Field Hockey), and the Indian Hockey team failed to qualify this year.

It has been four months since I departed India. In the meantime, I have traveled through Nepal, Chile, Brazil and Argentina. I’ve seen incredible things, met people from dozens of nations and I’ve grown to see the world very differently. Below I will summarize my summer and what lies ahead for me, using what I learned about the world and about myself.
India is a great mélange of people of different faiths, castes, colors, and walks of life. But what strikes me most, today, is their struggles. Hundreds of millions of Indians struggle to survive, earning less than $1 per day, living from hand to mouth. Thousands of Indian children die every day from preventable causes like diarrhea. For many, protein is scarce, clean water is miles away and flush toilets do not exist.
Those who have escaped the trap of poverty no longer struggle to survive. This rising middle class works in India’s large government, for its financial and technology sectors, and in tourism and services. For these people, the world is becoming a meritocracy, which incents these Indians to struggle to get ahead. Some Indians claw over each other for greater financial gain, but for the most part, I found Indians to be incredibly honest, just, and caring people, who nonetheless compete for their places in society.
I returned to business school in Chicago this fall and was reminded of different struggles. Business school students also struggle to get ahead: to get a job at the best company, to meet the right people, to make the most money, and so on. My non-business school friends struggle to get ahead in other ways: to buy the big car, get the big promotion, or simply to get enough time off from work to enjoy various leisure activities. Of course, many Americans struggle simply to make ends meet. While this doesn’t include sleeping on mud floors or harvesting individual grains of rice by hand, it does include paying for gasoline, day care and the other necessities of American life.
Happy Wheelsbuddhist Games OnlineI’ve left the US for another three months. I will be spending the Aussie summer studying in Sydney, Australia, from where I write today.
I’m struck by the different, or should I say, lack of, struggles here. From what I can tell, Australian workers each make about the same money, get roughly the same number of vacation days, have access to the same (ample) government services, and live pretty much the same lives. No one is rich, but no one is poor either. People are simply… content. (Lately, Australia’s biggest struggle has been versus South Africa on the cricket pitch!) This egalitarianism of course stems from Australia’s European-style socialism. Since the American-style free market offers greater incentives for effort and risk-taking, Americans are more driven to compete. (And so Americans end up with more stuff, but are we really happy?)
Returning to India, the Indian caste system consists of four major castes and the Dalits (which technically have no caste at all) who sit at the bottom. Above them are the Shudras, or laborers (farmers, artisans, service providers). Next are the Vaishyas (traders), followed by the Kshatriyas (leaders and warriors) and the Brahmins (teachers, scholars and religious leaders).
This is not so unlike the economic hierarchy in the US. But first allow me to cite a wonderful talk I attended earlier this year given by the COO of Chik-Fil-A. He drew a distinction between those workers who seek to create value and those who seek to extract value. The former work to move the world forward; they earn money as a consequence. Most Americans fall into the latter group: people who work to make money and (sometimes) move the world forward as a consequence.
Then, the homeless and other neglected groups in our society are the Dalits. Blue-collar workers are Shudras, and the average American white-collar worker is a trader, or Vaishya. The American equivalents of Kshatriyas are not limited to our political and military leaders, but also include social and cultural leaders such as professional athletes and film celebrities. Today, the Brahmin caste consists of academics and clergy just as before, but I argue it also consists of artists, nurses, non-profit workers, and all those who advance noble causes – people who seek to create value in our society.
There is also a correlation between this structure and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Abraham Maslow, a psychologist, proposed that people must satisfy their lower-order needs before they seek fulfillment of higher-order needs. People require food, water, and shelter first, followed by safety; only then, he argues, do people seek belonging and esteem. Finally, our highest-order needs are those of self-actualization, including needs for morality and creativity.
The poorest in our societies (in India, the US, or anywhere) primarily seek food, water, shelter and safety. Blue-collar workers seek safety (on the job), belonging (in unions and in their families), and increasingly so, esteem and self-actualization. Businesspeople are typically able to focus on the three highest levels. However, I argue, many Americans feel as though their monetary needs are not being met and therefore dwell on extracting more value from the world. Others feel that they have enough. These people volunteer and work for social justice. They devote themselves to religious life. They draw, sing, and dance. They conduct research and write books. In short, they create value for society.
This summer I had lots of free time, being many thousands of miles from my friends and work-a-day life in Chicago. Living in a developing nation and coming from the US, I certainly had no day-to-day financial concerns. I felt safe most of the time. Thus, I was able to contemplate issues of family, relationships, and those things that are truly important in life. I explored cultural topics, the arts, spirituality and writing (this blog). It was remarkable how much time I was able to spend at the top of Maslow’s pyramid – how this trader suddenly engaged in noble pursuits for his ten weeks abroad.
It was equally remarkable to me how quickl

Is a mechanical keyboard essential to your workflow? Probably not. You can get your typing tasks done with any old keyboard. But if you’re looking for a comfortable, precise, and satisfying typing experience, nothing beats a mechanical keyboard. Why Use a Mechanical Keyboard?
If you have a job that demands a ton of time typing — web development, web design, IT, and journalism are some professions that fit the bill — investing in a high-quality keyboard can lead to a more productive and enjoyable work experience.
I’ve used many keyboards in the past: Generic $9.99 replacement keyboards, stock keyboards that come free with a new desktop PC, high-end gaming keyboards, laptop keyboards, ultra-portable wireless keyboards, you name it. A mechanical keyboard has been my preference for the past three years. Here are some reasons why:
*Delight: Mechanical keyboards provide you with a fantastic typing experience. Each keystroke feels gratifying and authoritative, unlike on a common dome-switch keyboard, which feels mushy. I sit in front of the computer 10 to 12 hours a day, so putting money into my hardware goes a long way towards improved comfort and productivity.
*Speed and precision: Accentuating a key in a mechanical keyboard results in some form of tactile feedback, telling you that you’ve pressed the key successfully. Also, unlike dome-switch keyboards, you don’t need to press a key all the way down (called “bottoming out”) in order for your keystroke to register. This results in increased typing speed and fewer typos, especially when you’re touch-typing.
*Build quality: Good mechanical keyboards are sturdy and durable, being able to bear the brunt of your keystrokes for years without any degradation to your typing experience. With dome-switch keyboards, which rely on a soft rubber or silicone membrane, the typing experience may gradually change the older the keyboard gets.
Once you start using a mechanical keyboard, it will be hard to switch back to an ordinary keyboard. I use a laptop as my main work machine, but I have a mechanical keyboard hooked up to it 99% of the time. Also, after three years of hard use, my go-to mechanical keyboard still looks and feels exactly the same as the day I got it.
Lifehacker has a good intro to mechanical keyboards that you should read if you’re new to the keyboard technology.Drawbacks of Using a Mechanical Keyboard
Mechanical keyboards aren’t perfect. Here are some reasons that might make you think twice about using one:
*Cost: A good mechanical keyboard will set you back $80 to $300, making them a great deal more expensive than your run-of-the-mill keyboards. A lot of my recommendations in this article are in the $100 to $160 range, and three of them are over $200.
*Noise: You have to be careful about which type of mechanical keyboard switch you go with if you’re concerned about noise. Mechanical keyboards are notorious for making a racket. The noise level will be a key factor for you if you work in an open office space. Watch this video on the Techquickie YouTube channel titled Mechanical Keyboard Switches as Fast As Possible to help you make an informed choice. For a more detailed guide, see the Keyboard Switch guides on Reddit.
*Bulk: Mechanical keyboards are hefty. They’re generally bigger and heavier compared to normal keyboards.
*Wires: Most of the good mechanical keyboards in the market are wired. Only one mechanical keyboard on this list is wireless.
*Not designed for portability: Because of the size, weight, and wires of a typical mechanical keyboard, they’re not easy to lug around. You won’t be able to chuck them into your laptop bag as easily as portable wireless keyboards. If you’re always on the go, often working in coffee shops with tiny tables, a mechanical keyboard may not be the best option for you.The Best Mechanical Keyboards for Web Professionals
The technology in mechanical keyboards is old. It resurged in popularity because of computer gaming. Mechanical keyboards offer gamers better keystroke precision and speed, and the durability required to withstand the wear-and-tear that comes with marathon gaming sessions.
But modern mechanical keyboards aren’t just for gamers. They’re also great tools for coders, IT professionals, designers, writers, journalists, and others who do copious amounts of computer work.
After a ton of research — hitting up review sites and tech publications, mechanical keyboard forums, articles, and so forth — I managed to find ten mechanical keyboards that are highly regarded by the Internet community. Originally, I did this research for myself because I’ve been desiring to add another mechanical keyboard to my collection. I figured I might as well share my findings, in the hopes that doing so might help someone out.
Aesthetically, my picks are fitting in professional environments, so don’t expect any multi-colored/rainbow backlighting, LED displays, and special keys for your macros. My mechanical keyboard recommendations are elegantly simple, reflecting my personal preference for simple, functional aesthetics and my needs as a Web professional.

Without further ado, here are what I consider to be the best mechanical keyboards for professionals:1. Das KeyboardMechanical Keyboard Stabilizers
Source of photo: daskeyboard.com
The Das Keyboard is probably the most recognizable mechanical keyboard on the market.
Years ago, they received a lot of press from tech publications such as Tom’s Hardware (with an article titled Possibly One of the Best Keyboards Ever), TechCrunch, and CNET partly because of the novelty of the Das Keyboard Ultimate models, which don’t have any labeling on their keycaps:
Source of photo: daskeyboard.com
The mechanical keyboards are designed by Metadot Corporation, a Texas-based open source software company. The creators of the keyboard claim that the gold-plated mechanical switches in the Das Keyboard can handle up to 50 million keystrokes!2. CODE Mechanical Keyboard
Source of photo: wasdkeyboards.com
The CODE keyboard is a series of mechanical keyboards designed with programmers and developers in mind. It sports a clean, minimalist design. The pleasant (and adjustable) white LED backlighting is great for those of us who often find ourselves in dark, low-light work environments (such as server rooms). In addition, the keyboard can switch between three keyboard arrangements: QWERTY (the most common), Dvorak, or Colemak.
The CODE keyboard was designed by WASD Keyboards (producers of customizable mechanical keyboards) and Jeff Atwood. You might know Jeff Atwood as the founder of Stack Overflow, the Stack Exchange network, and as the author of the programming blog, Coding Horror. Read his blog post about the CODE keyboard to get an insider’s perspective on the keyboard’s inception.
(Side note: This is the next mechanical keyboard I’ll be buying!)

Source of photo: keyeduplabs.com
Keyed Up Labs (KUL) is a top-notch company that creates a range of well-regarded mechanical keyboards.
KUL specializes in tenkeyless keyboards, which don’t have the number pad that’s often located on the right side of full-size keyboards.
Many of us never use the number pad. Except for accountants, cashiers, statisticians, and those who frequently key-in numbers into their machine, most people can live without the number pad.
The advantage of removing the redundant keys found in the number pad is that it will create more room on your desk and it will reduce the distance your right hand needs to travel when reaching for your mouse.

$149 on Amazon4. Rapoo KX Wireless Mechanical Keyboard
Source of photo: rapoo.com
Mechanical keyboards are typically wired devices. Not the Rapoo KX though.
Besides the obvious benefit of being able to eliminate wire clutter, the Rapoo KX is also one of the least expensive mechanical keyboards I’ve come across, at $85. It’s also smaller than most mechanical keyboards, which makes the Rapoo KX potentially portable.
For a more detailed look at the Rapoo KX, watch the video review named Wireless + Mechanical – Is This Real Life? on the YouTube channel Unbox Therapy (which has over 2.6 million subscribers). Also see the list of wireless mechanical keyboards on Reddit for more sans-wire alternatives.5. Ducky Legend
Source of photo: duckychannel.com.tw
Taiwan-based company DuckyChannel has a collection of mechanical keyboards for gaming and work.
The Ducky Legend is the model I feel best suits work environments. This keyboard has a stylish aluminum case and adjustable backlighting.

$141 on Amazon6. Happy Hacking Keyboard (HHKB)
Source of photo: pfusystems.com
The Happy Hacking Keyboard is geared towards professionals and heavy computer users. It was first introduced in 1996 by Japanese IT company, PFU Limited. Since then, the keyboard has managed to gain a loyal fan base.
In the quest to make a small-form-factor keyboard, the designers of the HHKB removed the arrow keys, function keys, and several other keys such as Caps Lock, Backspace, and Insert. Instead, these keys are coupled together with other frequently used keys. For example, the Backspace key shares the same key as the Delete key, and Caps Lock is combined with the Tab key. You can use the “missing” keys by pressing the Fn key along with the key that it shares.
The Happy Hacking Keyboard’s design results in an ultra compact 60-key keyboard, often referred to as a 60% keyboard (because a full-sized keyboard has 104 keys).
This mechanical keyboard has a cult following, as well as its fair share of critics. The biggest disadvantage is that if you use arrow keys, print screen, insert, etc. frequently, then this would not be an efficient keyboard for you.
In my case, as a web developer and writer, I have become accustomed to keyboard shortcuts that rely on several keys that the HHKB decided to drop, such as the Up/Down Arrow keys for jumping to lines of code, Ctrl+Left Arrow/ Right Arrow to move to the previous/next word in a sentence, Ctrl+Page Up/Page Down to scroll web pages, and so forth.
But if desk space and minimalism are things that matter most to you, then this mechanical keyboard is definitely something to check out. As for me, a tenkeyless keyboard is the perfect balance between minimalism, size, and functionality.Mechanical Keyboard.com Review

Source of photo: diatec.co.jp
The mechanical keyboard community holds the Filco Majestouch 2, often referred to as the MJ2, in high regard. It has a rep for having a solidly sturdy build quality.
Filco products are by a Japanese company called Diatec Corp. The company has been around since 1982, and they specialize in PC peripherals and mobile devices.
Reddit’s mechanical keyboard buying guide wiki says that the MJ2 is “The big boss of Cherry MX keyboards.”8. Vortex POK3R
Source of photo: vortexgear.tw
The Vortex POK3R mechanical keyboard, sometimes called the Poker3, is a range of compact and customizable mechanical keyboards. Besides its interesting appearance and small size, another notable feature is that the keyboard is programmable. (You can find more info about POK3R’s programmability via its user manual.)
The POK3R keyboard has an atypical design. When viewed on the side, you’ll notice that the keycaps and switches are mounted on top of the keyboard tray, a blackplate, rather than being embedded into it. This design contributes to the keyboard’s compact dimensions and distinct aesthetics.

$140 on Amazon9. Topre REALFORCE 104U
Source of photo: amazon.com
Cherry MX is the series of switches that you’ll often find in popular mechanical keyboards such as the Das Keyboard. But they’re not the only players on the block. Topre switches are another type of mechanical keyboard switch.
The Topre REALFORCE is the pricy, flagship mechanical keyboard by Japan-based Topre Corp, makers of electronic equipment. For an alternative that’s notably less expensive, the Topre Type Heaven, at $155, is also a well-regarded option.10. Kinesis Advantage
Source of photo: kinesis-ergo.com
The Kinesis Advantage is a long-standing, ergonomically-designed keyboard that vastly veers off from the keyboard designs we’re all used to. This keyboard is popular amongst software engineers, IT professionals, and web developers — people who spend a ton of time typing on their keyboards, and using keyboard shortcuts and command-line interfaces.
Source of photo: wikipedia.org
The ergonomics of the Kinesis Advantage can help lower the impact of the repetitive strain your hands endure when you’re typing for long hours. Its keys are separated and angled to complement your hands’ natural positions. The keyboard has concave key wells that minimize the distance your fingers need to travel to reach a key.
Jarred Walton, over at the hardware review site AnandTech, wrote that out of three ergonomic mechanical keyboards he reviewed, the Kinesis Advantage is his favorite.
The Kinesis Advantage may not be everybody’s cup of tea. The keyboard’s layout will take time to get used to. And once you get accustomed to it, it will be hard to use traditional keyboard layouts. On the other hand, a top Amazon reviewer that goes by the handle of Ed said that it only took two weeks to get used to the keyboard and that if you’re patient “it will not only pay off with better ergonomics, but speed.”
The $270 price is quite steep. But if you’re suffering from wrist- and hand-related injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome, or if you want to prevent them from happening, the Kinesis Advantage keyboard might be deserving of your hard-earned dineros.

Taiwan-based company DuckyChannel has a collection of mechanical keyboards for gaming and work.
The Ducky Legend is the model I feel best suits work environments. This keyboard has a stylish aluminum case and adjustable backlighting.

In order to earn more money through your business, you need more eyeballs on you. This usually looks like generating more traffic to your business website.
In the world of SEO and online marketing, generating traffic to a business website almost seems like some sort of secret code that only a few people know about.
The reality is that generating traffic to a business website just takes time, grit, patience and sometimes money. And, of course, it also involves work. Here are x ways to generate more traffic to your business website.Use search engine optimization.
Search engine optimization, otherwise known as SEO, is the art of inserting specific keywords into blog posts and articles so that people can find your content on Google search.
You may be wondering, “How do I find these keywords?” Google has a free tool you can use to search for keywords (and similar keywords) to see what their search volume and competition are like.
Once you find the right keywords, you write content that uses the keywords in the most natural way possible. You can also use a free plugin like Yoast SEO to see whether or not you’ve used the keyword enough times throughout the post. It will also test readability for the users.

Social media is a goldmine for both free and paid ways to generate traffic to your business website. In fact, if I were to look into my Google Analytics, I would see that social media is my number one traffic source.
The reason social media is effective is because not everyone will find your content through a Google search. Additionally, not everyone hangs out on the same social media channels, so incorporating different channels based on what you find to give you the best ROI creates a solid strategy.
Here are just a few of the ways to use social media to generate traffic to your website:
*Use the bio section of all social media channels to share your latest article.
*Automate the sharing of content with tools like Hootsuite or Edgar.
*Share often! Social media moves very quickly so you’ll want to make sure you’re sharing things often so that more people see your stuff.
*Share other people’s stuff. This helps increase your own following so you can direct more people to your business website.
*Share a new piece of content every time it goes live. (Note: You’ll want to make sure you’re consistent with creating new content on your business website in order for this to work.)

Pinterest is amazing for generating traffic to a website. Out of all my social media traffic referrers, Pinterest is by far the most effective.
The reason Pinterest is so effective is because it’s basically a search engine with pretty images. People go to Pinterest to find solutions to their problems all the time. They also use it as a way to save helpful content they can read later.
Here are some of the ways to use Pinterest effectively:
*Make sure the images on your website are pinnable.
*Share other people’s pins to increase your following.
*Join group boards in your niche and share your pins.
*Write good descriptions for your pins.
*When you send an email out to your list, give them the option to save the corresponding pin so they can read it later.
There are also tools you can use to automate Pinterest and make it less time consuming. These tools include Boardbooster so you can automatically pin to group boards and Tailwind so you can schedule out pins in advance. The both of them working together creates Pinterest magic.Try Facebook ads.
Another solid way to generate traffic to your website is with Facebook ads. While this does require you to pay, the reality is that if you get the audience down right, you can get qualified visitors that don’t cost you a whole lot.
